Re: Stagnant water

Can't give you an exact answer, Gazza. But what I can tell you is I recently failed to re-open one of the valves on a side drain when doing some work on the garage system. So the line was probably left closed for some 6-8 weeks. It's a 2 meter run of 2" pipe. Not wanting to risk anything, I un-...

Re: Dam flukes

Lee

If you had poured flour in the water they'd have been more active. If you change their environment they react for a period of time.

Tom

PS: Not recommending you try the flour... but if you do then please make sure your sieve it first ! ;)

Re: Dam flukes

Lee I thought you were a convert to the "new" praziquantel commercial treatment? I have the view that flukes get triggered by light by the way. So these bright(er) spells we are having seem to set them off for an early spring "hi, I'm a fluke, please try and kill me" operation. Tom

Re: Shiro Treatment (CT)

That's a good photographic representation of the results that can be achieved. As per the original thread, had a similar situation when I got back from a business trip. I can only guess the koi decided to go for 3 rounds with the shower as it was nicely bashed up. 3 doses of CT, heat and 7 days late...

Re: Alternatives?

OK, well the news has prompted me to pull my finger out and add to the stock pile.

Honestly, I think we've gone "preventative" crazy. I'm surprised we're allowed to leave our homes unassisted.

Re: Mucus

Hi Duncan Thanks for the insights. That picture is from about 2 years ago. It took 6 weeks to clear. However, it repeated on this koi again this autumn and took about a month to clear. However, I asked because I've just been through it with another koi and that's taken about 3 months to clear. Reall...

Re: Mucus

Tommy - this is recurrent and moves around a number of koi so I can't see it being one weak immune system or similar. The koi was photographed in mid-summer.

OK, let's go back to basics....

Dunc - can you explan how pox is "triggered" in koi?

Re: BHM - Why?

Well, I've never thought anything "special" to BHM except that it's extremely porous but with a high, internal surface area with a "configuration" that allows it to remain clean under high flow. Other medias may well work but it's finding the right balance between high surface ar...

Re: Mucus

Well, I had considered that but I was bemused by why it consistently blows out on the head like this?

Nothing on the pecs, nothing on the tail.. always on the head.

I've also had it at 23c+ ---- now I appreciate that pox can blow out at any temps but it seemed odd.

Mucus

This is good (the new area) as I can now ask some questions and received some considered responses. So what is the cause of the circular mucus patches that I (and others) seem to get on our koi? It normally affects one or two koi at a time. The mucus patches are often very good representations of ci...

Re: BHM - Why?

No, they don't have to be in sunlight. The configuration really means that the media wouldn't see much natural light even if left in full sun (think of the floors of a car park). Mine are fully enclosed in polycarb and never see light. The only bacterial filter I have on the pond are the two double ...

Re: Winter Feeding

Um, I have failed on temperature control: Still at 15c. I never really got round to lowering the temps. They haven't been fed since Christmas day. I am considering next year changing the schedule a little based on some recent insights from Japan. I may continue feeding at 16-17c into late January an...

The top return is the overflow, Tony. The bottom the normal return. You need one on a pump fed otherwise if it blocks..... whoops....

Re: Shower Upgrade

Looking good, Gazza. Your koi will appeciate you more for it ;) As for clarity... I do see Dan's point. However, I have seen several ponds which are primarily shower based that have very good clarity so it can be done. But they wouldn't meet Dan's gin requirements, though. As for mine (heavily showe...
