Re: Low winter pond temperatures

I'm heated and covered, pond has been held at +10°C since 22 December. I will leave temperature and covers until mid March but am always guided by the ambient temperatures. Once the covers come off then I will start a course of Virkon S Aquatic to lower bacterial count while raising the temperature....

Hi herbie

I hope you have a diving suit, you'll never catch them otherwise :)

Re: Perfect pond depth

Would it not be cheaper to heat a shallow pond in winter as well as summer in this kind of climate? Also for the same gallonage the surface area could be huge giving loads of swimming space or the turnover of the filters could also be better if maintaining the same surface area as a deep pond impro...

Re: Perfect pond depth

I think in Malaysia the year round temperature doesn't vary much giving the pond stability. In northern climates I think we go for 6 feet deep to prevent pond temperatures swinging too quickly. Large water volumes per fish help our Koi to grow large I think rather than depth but most of us overstock...

Re: Solar pump for DIY Solar heater

Don't fit a non-return valve, if the sun doesn't come out for a few days then the bacteria in the water will have time to multiply before the sun comes out again and dumps the toxic soup into your pond. Hey presto, no Koi. Believe me, I've done it and am not proud.

Re: uv advice please

Yes, it's the transformer (choke). Get a new one for a 55W tube, for best performance they shouldn't be too big or small

Re: uv advice please

All bits in the box can be bought separately from electrical type stores or DIY and are quite easy to change. Make sure you write down the info from the current choke and starter before going out to buy the pieces. Note wiring positions down on a bit of paper before starting. Don't forget to disconn...

Re: Ben's RO

Hi Ben,

What do you put the high efficiency down to ?

Is it the softener or the boost pump? I'm running the 3 x 150gpd system and am getting nowhere near your results.

Re: RO Help

The spawning was sort of planned but not by me. I've bred Koi before and gave most away but haven't bothered for a few years. Last year so many kept asking for Koi that I gave in, the problem was it was already 31st July. Anyway I caught some victims and put them in the indoor pond with new water (t...

Re: RO Help

Hi Colin, I'm going to be using RO soon. I have a 450gpd from Alan and have done lots of testing with it. The unit is in series and works very well and I'm getting 50% good water BUT I'm on a water meter so its costing me too much. I have to build a small Koi pool in my garage to house last years fr...

Re: Rverse Osmosis

Merlin unit - don't touch it. I've got one sitting on a shelf. Waste water at 70 - 75% and the water meter trying to spin off its axe. It will give you 1,500 litres a day in summer and throw 6,000 litres down the drain. I now have a 450litres a day unit from http://www.purewaterproducts.co.uk/index....

Re: The Cetus sieve

Not an option Benyii, concrete pond has been in for years and the filters are at the same height as pond. Two pumps it will have to be.

It sounds like the Ultra III could be a better option than the Cetus though, don't want the 4 inch inlet pipe coming off.
