Re: Heater Problem
Phil, The reason I suggested using kettle descaler as opposed to white vinegar, is that is designed to be used is our kettles, and that the `clean-up` after usng it would be simple. A couple of boil and empties and its good to brew again. White vinegar on the other hand can be tricky. To be honest, ...

Re: Help with my old pond
Hi Stacey, I think I agree with deadog, lower your water level a couple of inches asap, because I would say the the main cause of the algae growing on the outside of your pond, is because the grouting under your capping stones is letting water through. By lowering your water level a bit, you would s...

Re: Heater Problem
Hi Phil,
If it was me, I think that I would look for a kettle de-scaler type of product. Fill the heater up and wait till all the fizzing stops. It might take a couple of goes at it though, if the scale is as bad/thick as you think.
Hope that helps

Re: Tancho
Hi, My initial thought is --you`ll be lucky! As you say, they are a bit hard to come across and are quite a sought after fish, but there are some around. The small size that you are after is where the problems lie, as not many breeders will want to sell off a tancho when it is tiny, and miss out on ...

I`m not so sure you should call it `aged water`really, after a few hours sitting around without moving and starting to smell, `Geriatric` water would be a better term.

Re: hi all
I`m agreeing with the others, with an aerated bottom drain, a flat bottom does the job fine. Brek, when I dug my pond, 20 something years ago, there was no such thing as this jabfloor stuff, nor the kingsmill (sp ? ) insulation boards, they hadn`t been invented yet. I used 8x4 sheets of 2 inch thick...

Yes but no but,
While the bore-hole idea sounds attractive, would`nt you end up poisoning the ground water that supplies it if you were to flush any medications like Duncans superverm/flubenol/organophosphates down your soakaway?

Re: Who uses a uv?
I only turn mine ON if the water starts to `green up`. Once the water has cleared again, OFF it goes. No point in giving my money to the power company unnecessarily, I`d rather hoard it myself.

Hi Ed,
Looks like you`ve got a couple of power leads for your pumps in as well. Good thinking.

Re: Why matting rather than K1?
Hi Ed, I think you`ll find that the main remover of the majority of the fish waste would be your vortex or settlement chamber. From there, the water goes to the bottom of your filter, and then UPwards through the matting cartridge and out to your pond. By design, some debris/fines will fall to the f...

Re: Depth of water.
Hi Russ, To my mind, you wouldn`t have ANY water above the top of a cartridge, because if you did, water being what it is, it would take the line of least resistance, and by-pass the cartridge completely. Which you wouldn`t want. Personally I`d have about a half inch of the cartridge sticking out ab...

Re: deep ponds
Hi Adam, I don`t think there are any hard and fast rules about how deep you can go, but it seems around 6 ft is the usual depth for the average keeper. Over in the USA there are quite a few of the `top end` guys with 8 - 10 foot deep ponds, I`m racking my brain to remember their names though, sorry....

Re: New to forum, bottom drain question.
Hi Dave, It might be worth checking that your bottom drain cover is not set too low, `cos if it is it will certainly restrict the flow to your filter. Another thought, if one supply pipe is pulling at a different speed to the other, it may well be a good idea to put a ball valve on the quickest, so ...

Re: compact sieve into K1 advisable ?
Fishy, You`d want your first bay to be fluidised really, then the second static bay would collect your `fines` before the water returns to your pond. If you go the other way round, you`ll be quite upset at how ineffective your filter will seem, and at just how much crap goes straight through the fil...
