Re: Streamflow ponds???
Would older, mature, larger koi be okay spending their life swimming in a stream? or does this system have some still/slower moving areas? Stuart had some huge older fish in his and they were fine. The current doesn't look too fast when you see it. The deep end has slower flow than the shallow end ...

Re: Streamflow ponds???
I was going to go this route for my new pond build Bob and only changed my mind as I decided to go with a box welded liner for cost/speed reasons. I saw Stuart's pond working and it was brilliant. The base was spotless and the fish looked amazing swimming against the current and demolishing all the ...

Re: nexus overflowing
If you lower the air ring it will stop the crud settling out in the bio section as it will agitate the water down there. With the air ring being on those feet it can create a still area in the bottom of the bio chamber.

Re: Food and amounts
I agree with you on little and often. Jasper from EA Did an article in koi nations before it folded saying less frequent larger feeds allow the fish to utilise the food more efficiently but made no reference to the best thing for growing the fish. The way i think about it is feeding little and often...

Re: spot the female< Not a sexist remark>
When at Cuttlebrook talking to Mark, he said he sexes by feeling the gill plates, fairly easy at this time of year females have very smooth plates, males rough plates a bit like sandpaper, but in smaller males there is only a very slight roughness. This works fine with males that are showing these ...

Re: Min size for nexus 200
The koi will be in a temp pond of about 800 Gallons. There are 6 koi of about 300mm (some smaller). The k1 is not mature as I have not got the nexus yet. My thought was to run the nexus on the temp pond and transfer it to my new pond when its ready. I think you answered my question when you said yo...

Re: RO Systems
If docs are going to be the big problem might it be best to run a foam fractionater first? This could reduce the organics before you use carbon to mop up the last bits.

Re: newby pond build questions
A concrete collar helps to stabilise the ground around the excavation as you dig. I'm building a liner pond (but with brick and block walls rather than sleepers) and a concrete collar is the first thing to do IMO. And by doing it you can be totally confident that the sleepers will be resting on a ve...

Re: Adding Clay any good?
Never used it and never plan to! Can see possibly the point of adding it to food but aside from that I'd want to remove stuff from my water rather than adding more stuff back in!

Re: Who uses a uv?
Was waiting to see if someone else posted first as I've kinda hinted about my ideas but as no one has here we go! I think algae blooms are triggered by higher levels of organics in the pond. This is certainly what we find in planted tanks. We dose nitrate and phosphate into those tanks to ensure hea...

Re: What would you do?
Depends on the parasite becuase if it's white spot and I don't know the gallonage and it will be very hard to calculate then I would be very tempted to dose it with salt and measure that using a hydrometer so I could just add salt until I got the right dosage level! Maybe not the most accurate way b...

Re: Who uses a uv?
Hi eds, yes I am feeding more, since beginning march been chucking a handful in on a morning mixture of staple/medicarp/yamato. we had two really good days of sun when it finally made it above the house and the pond had a good 6 hours of sun on it each, so the food may have contributed eh? Applying...

Re: Who uses a uv?
Mine went slightly green and then cleared again. I have been making sure they don't get much food yet though. Has your greening up coincided with any change in feeding?
