Re: Japanese matting insight

Dave22, I would like to add a small comment to your post ...I want to try and optimise my filtration next year and get crystal clear water, but don't know what to do Try to remember that good filtration is more than just clear water. In fact I would reverse the order. I have seen plenty of ponds wit...

Re: How long will aged K1 survive out of water low temps ?

Not exactly K1 but I have a buddy who had a commercial koi breeding facility. His show tanks worked with large trickle towers which were shut down in the off season for months on end. Despite this they would cope with a full tank of koi within a day or two of start up he claimed. I think your K1 may...

Re: Depth of water.

That said, it depends on how water is traveling through your matting. Myself I have an over/under system with the water traveling vertically up through the matting which also has spacers. In this case I have about an inch of water on top of the matting

Re: deep ponds

Absolutely! I had problems with the fish flashing the first three years after I built my pond. This is how long it took me to figure out it all came from the pressure treated wood that covered the filter. Every time it rained the fish would scrape and scower themselves like crazy. It wasn't until I ...

Re: deep ponds

The one major drawback I come across is the airpressure you will need if you plan on using an airdome on the drain cover. You may find the air pump uses more leccy than you planned for the amount of bubbles you get as well as the extra strain on the pump itself

Re: Timber pond construction ??

Yes hard wood will last much longer and avoids the evils of treated wood. Merbau is OK but I wouldn't want to use in subsurface. The are other woods that last much longer. still the issue of sustainability does come to mind and I find myself feeling a bit guilty of my contribution to wholesale rainf...

Re: Pergola and more!

Yes that is an Ilex. Cloud tree is a misleading term and the Japanese call them Nawaki. There are several good books out there on how to do it yourself. not as hard as you might imagine. The maple on the right is my next victim. The price of these ilex has shot through the roof in the last three yea...

OMG!

Had a bit of a fright last week I had detached the hosepipe I use the fill the QT due to the frost. I needed to bring the auto water timer out of the cold. I came into the QT shed only to find it half empty. The hose had thawed and syphoned half the water out of the QT. The fish did not look happy a...

Re: Aquamax Eco failure. Suggestions?

BTW I would have your friend chect the wiring to the pump. I had a classic aquamax 5500 bun out in 6 months and it turned out the yellow/green earth wire was switched causing the pump to use the ground as earth. I had no ground-fault at that point so i didn't detect it until I tried to install one. ...
