Looks to me like the drain is the main drain, the one past your manhole which is the responsibility of the water board who would not take lightly to you moving it. If you are moving in a few years you could have some awkward questions to answer if a surveyor picks it up or worse still if the dreaded...

Raise the pond up under the window cill, move the wall up to the conservatory wall, or better still make it the conservatory wall and add a viewing panel in the conservatory. Deep joy. Tel

Hi, Bob, just my 2 penneth, the front spans are just to wide for any timber unless you have a flitch beam designed for the purpose which would need an engineer to design as has been suggested. try to reduce span to a max of 3.6 metres ie 12 feet, then you can use 8x2 or 12 x 2 with a nice curved bot...

Hi again, lots of interesting comments, all constructive. If you read my ply plate suggestion the bottom would end up at about half way down the rafter leg as has been commented on. I like the tensioned wire idea, preferably stainless steel available from most boat chandlers but not cheap. You are on...

Hi Bob, Dave is correct you do need some type of triangulation, you could try a triangular ply plate screwed and glued to both rafters at high level with the bottom of it level with the bottom of the white panel of your neighbours over the back of you, as in your photo. The ply would need to be 3/4&...

If i understand the question correctly you are laying 18" x 9" blocks laid flat so i assume you mean 18" x 9" x 4" blocks laid the 4" high way in which case i work it out to be 21.6 blocks per metre or have i missed something here Of course Thorny is correct if you are ...

Hi guys above all there is a safety issue here, if you or worse still your kids are standing next to the pond and it goes who knows what the outcome could be, it simply is not good enough to say it should be ok at this that or the other, you must be sure. Try ringing Solaglas or Pilkingtons technica...

Hi Bob, when choosing a width or depth of timber for a particular span the golden rule is half the span plus 2" or 50mm, i,e, 10ft span x a half = 5" plus 2" = 7" timbers, so you can see if i read it correctly you are going to need some hefty timbers to get over this pond and you...

Well, i would not agree, how you would use a jigsaw to drill a hole say 1" diam for insatnce is new to me. All accuracy would go out of the window in my humble opinion, and you need to be accurate as there is not much cover on the fitting flange. The choice is yours, but i did stress in my post ...

No special skills required, use a good quality hole cutter, drill from the face and when you are half way thru' or so drill from the inside, this will stop any splitting out and will leave the hole nice and clean from both sides, remember to use a slightly bigger holesaw than the fitting that you in...

Dear Justin, back home now, got my new fish back safely. Just to clear up a few points and to answer your questions. Many years ago it was farely common standard practice in the swimming pool industry to use horizontal and vertical re- bar in odd shaped pools, kidney shaped for instance. Of course wi...
