Re: wintering you koi
I really don't see how good pond husbandry will reduce the number of bad bacteria. If they are present, which they always are, then they will compete for food and habitat along with any non pathogenic bacteria and it will be totally dependant on how much food they can find as to how many there are p...

Re: wintering you koi
Would it make sense to use something to keep the bacterial count lower during these temperatures then - say a weekly dose of something like virkon?

Re: Colombo Alporex
No rush ..... famous last words.............. hoping not to need it ever! I have a couple of WS3 on the shelf for the tank and have not needed them either this year, only had the dreaded gill flukes brought in with koi this year.

Re: Colombo Alporex
So this is basically WS3 as made by King British. Brilliant for whitespot. I was told years ago the quinine allowed the treatment to kill the whitespot whilst encysted which no other treatment could do. Hence you could eliminate it much more quickly than with FMG. It used to be made in a decent size...

Re: Blanket weed treatments
yes we have gone back to CBA after Eco gold failed to keep it under control for more than a couple of weeks... but the CBA is also struggling, dose number 3 may well have to go in sooner rather than later - been weekly for the last 2 weeks..... was hoping to get it go a month but I don't think it wi...

Blanket weed treatments
Probably 1 for Syd please? Can someone point me to the posts, links to sites etc that analysed how these treatments worked and what the ingredients were please. I recall reading it somewhere but cant remember where. I am struggling a bit this year to keep ours controlled and suspect the drum has som...

Re: Fishless cycling
I used a note book that has long gone Syd! The nitrite was never off the scale with an API kit, it just never went down hence the swap to bin 2. Oh yes and I used to test the KH and bicarb when it dropped below 3. I am always a bit surprised with these people that cycle ERIC filters with really high...

Re: Fishless cycling
We had that situation when maturing K1 for the new pond. The build filling got delayed.... and I had K1 being fed ammonia in a brewing bin but the ammonia used to go in a few hours but the nitrite kept rising. I did read somewhere that too high a level of nitrite actually inhibits the bugs that use ...

Re: BKKS nationals
Missed you yesterday Duncan. Have to say the show was 100% better than last years, even the weather! Yes the price of koi is eye watering even rubbish small ones seem to cost too much. The trickle in system was very good but now they need to provide a small scoop net for each vat so someone can remo...

Re: Praziquantel versus Flubenol
Thanks Duncan, Problem is a couple of years back several people, myself included, found flukesolve also did not work. It may be due to not dissolving it who knows. I do know we tried it at the cost of almost £100 to treat our pond and they were back within a couple of weeks (skin flukes) so have gon...

Praziquantel versus Flubenol
Duncan, Just wondering what the advantages and disadvantages of the 2 are? For me flubenol is cheaper, doesn't seem to affect the koi like telmin and superverm used to and you say it has an effect on gill fluke eggs. So why would you want prazi?? Am I missing something other than the fact you seem t...

Re: Bad water, fish dying.
It is worth checking the new UV bulb too- we had a couple last year that glowed at the ends so thought they were working , water was getting greener and greener so got hubby to have another look and the bulb was basically burnt out -just the ends glowing so was doing nothing. Changed it and still no...

Re: Question about gill flukes
Thanks Duncan. Good so they are in the better option! More luck than anything as we keep flubenol in the cupboard as it seems to control our flukes and it is way cheaper than prazi for a big volume of water. So what do you think about the 3 day apart dose that's popular at higher temps? ie over 20*C...
