Jose,
Thanks for all this info, VERY informative & very reassuring for us BB users out there. I'll have to ask Pam at Avenue Fisheries what her KH is next time i'm in there, as her stocking densities are at times quite high, also her turnover rates etc, for info.

Thanks & regards,

Hiya Scotty, I'd agree in parts what you've said about bead filters, As to the crap lodging in them, not a problem if you backwash regularly(daily, on a timer, twice on a saturday), but isn't not carrying out regular maintenance a no-no on all filters, even K1? Secondly, pumps.....Yes, I was on a sw...

Gazza, If you've got no foam coming out, either you've not got much protein in the qt, or you could try fiddling with the air, either more or less. I know I don't have mine running all the time now, perhaps once a week/fortnight, depending how things go, or how the water looks...Easy tho, aren't the...

[quote="Dazzle"]Building one and finding the right fittings for 4inch pipe etc is a pain. I would just save time and wasted money and buy a proper fractioner. Plus, you will be playing about with the water levels trying to extract the right amount of water/ foam for days. You don't want to...

Re: Home Made Protein Thingy's

OK guys i know a few of you out there have done this or tried some out before so i thought i would ask the question :?: have you made one and how do you do it as i was thinking about putting one on the QT to see how it goes or if it does anything.I have recently installed the new shower and better ...

Andy, Sorry for late reply, but here we go! Firstly, similar to a sand filter? In a fashion. Basically, all the bead filters work by having a pressure vessel filled with floating beads of a small size, normally 3-4mm dia. When water is pumped into the base or side of the filter, the beads float to t...

Andy, 1 other option for the filtration would be a Bubblebead, the footprint is small, can be remote sited or behind fences etc. Similar kind of price to a nexus as well. There are a few of us on here running bead type setups....

I know its a different design to an answer, but it doesn't seem to get through an estrosieve Scotty, certainly not IMHO on my setup, maybe because of the different mechanics involved as against an answer? :?

For me No2 is ready now, No 1 has got more to come, and thats what makes it difficult! I voted for 2 because a) it floats my boat b) No1 has a fair bit more to go c) I'm an impatient bugger and no2 is a corker. I think you've got the best of both worlds tho, A cracking fish now, and a potentially ev...

Looks good Bob, Where do you obtain your food-grade plastic sheet from, I'm doing a filter build for my skimmer at the mo, and will need sheet as well as mesh ( which I've already sorted)? Another query, what pipework do you use for the air ring, and how is it connected up to an air pump? I think I ...

Thats exactly it Jon, I'll get some photos of mine when I get home, only difference on mine is some slit hose around the bottom of the 4" pipe, to protect the cut edges. The sludge exit pipe has been cut to the right length to fit nice 'n tight over my side wall, and I hold that in place with a...
