Re: Fishless cycling

Interesting,
So taking that all into account, a small amount of plant food would actually not be a bad idea in addition to ammonia. But as we both have mentioned, when push comes to shove a more elegant solution might simply be the classic "Just Add Water" :D

Re: Fishless cycling

Hi everyone, One little side note. I carried out a series of tests many years back while cycling a filter for a small Q-tank. The system volume was about 2000 liters and I ran the test each time for 6 weeks using a closed system without water changes. What I noticed was after about the forth week th...

Re: Sieve and Bakki

Hi Shamus, sorry for the late reply. I agree with your choice of bottom drain to the the bakki filter and the nexsus on the skimmer. The reason is that you want a high level flow in the bakki shower and that will not be possible on the skimmer unless it happens to be a couple of feet wide of course....

Re: Blanket weed solution in sight?

Diego, I have never found that the rate of water changing affected the blanket weed in the pond. In the beginning I changed less water than I do today but the transition didn't make any difference to weed growth. It wasn't until I added changed the filter to static K that the blanket weed sudden dis...

Re: Blanket weed solution in sight?

Hi Diego, Nice to hear from you again. Yes almost all the koi boards are suffering in attendance, not just this one. With regards to the zinc oxide issue; there are many products out there which I suspect rely on zinc oxide as an algaecide. The one that come to mind foremost is Cloverleaf Blanket we...

Re: Making growing tank / quarantine from 1000lt ibc tank

I would suggest a paralel arrangement instead of a serial setup. This would avoid concentrating waste in the down stream tanks. I think a pump rate of about 8000 l/hr would be about right

Blanket weed solution in sight?

Hi Mates, About eight or nine years back I converted my filter system from and Evolution Aqua "Answer" to a static kaldnes prefilter. My guess is that most of the older members of this board remember the conversion. It is as far as I am concerned the perfect and most economical setup I can...

Re: vortex filter with a nexus

If you have lots of short bits of blanket weed breaking off and sticking to the outside of the Kaldness screen, this will cause the water level to rise in the entrance channel and the pond side of the filter, I stuck a long brush in between the screen and the wall and it does give you little extra t...

cheap supplies

I know many people who know about this site and buy things there on a regular basis (as do I). But for those not yet in the know you should really check this out. The offerings are a mish-mash of everything under the sun but there are definitely things available that we can use in our ponds. Example...

Re: Koi ID?

I couldn't say Louie. To be truthful, koi don't automaticaly fit in a catagory unless they are culled for it. I would hazard to guess that your fish is something that is outside the bounds of breeder culling or perhaps someone was just interested is how it would turn out. In any case the main thing ...

Re: Depth of water.

Not quite sure how much room you have at the bottom of the chamber but I would think you would need at least 4"- 5" underneath the cartridge and at least 1"of water above it ( matting 1" below the level of the weir) Then however much room is in between is the how high you make th...

Re: Depth of water.

The main point is the matting must not be a solid block but instead have spaces in a checker board like pattern that allows a good exchange of water and nutrient to the bacteria living within the matting. I feel a vertical setup with the water flowing from below to above with air from beneath and an...

Re: Who or what are the carriers of diseases infecting ponds

In general I feel that with just about everything with the exception of white spot, people tend to be the greatest vector for parasites in our ponds. Generally by adding something that has not or could not be adequately sterilized to the pond. Other then that, amphibians, water fowl (landing in the ...
