Re: Anoxic filtration
Yes, if you can make the baskets and put them into the pond somewhere it will allow them to begin maturing. As for a prefilters a RDF is very suitable. Let us know how you get on with the one you choose.

Re: pond builder in the Midlans area
Sorry Russ, I don't know any pond builders in that area but maybe you could try contacting koi clubs local to you and asking whether any of their members have had a pond built for them and, most importantly, were they happy with it, or do any of the members have local knowledge of pond builders. Sor...

Amanda, you can buy a new copy of Duncan's book through this site, just click the Koi Quest logo at the top of any forum page and it will take you to the site's index page with a picture of Duncan's book in the centre. Just follow the links from there.

Re: bacteria and the nitrogen cycle
There isn’t a simple answer to this, Russ, because we regularly refer to there being two species of nitrifying bacteria that colonise our biofilters - nitrosomonas and nitrobacter but, in fact, those are genus names and different genera (plural of genus) then divide into several species and sub-spec...

Re: Spring
There are aerobic (nitrogen cycle) bugs in zones A and B and facultative anaerobic bugs in zone C. Normal doses of potassium permanganate are no more harmful to the aerobic bugs than they are to the biofilms in conventional biofilters and will have no discernible effect on the facultative anaerobic ...

Re: Recharging a dechlorinator
I haven't tried to take one of these to pieces but I have seen them close up when I helped set up my preferred way of doing water changes at koi shows, the continuous trickle through method with freshly dechlorinated water. My recollection is that they aren't made to be taken apart but, if you can r...

Re: Anoxic filtration
Mick, I appreciate your attempts to learn by heart my witterings about anoxic filtration  but don't forget Kevin Novak's original book on the subject. You can download it for free from iTunes (the link is at the end of my article) and there's a lot of technical information in there, including ...

Re: Midges & Mozzies!
Gnats and mosquitoes around ponds will always be a problem because swarming around water is their natural behaviour. Some people say that repellent candles will work but I haven't found them to be very effective. You need to build up the scent in the air around where you're sitting so you need lots ...

Re: Larger diamiter pipe from pump
No Russ, Increasing pipe size reduces friction losses but there is a law of diminishing returns to take into account. If you already have exceeded the recommended pipe size of 1½ inches, you will already have reduced the losses on a short section of pipe to negligible proportions. Increasing the siz...

Re: K1 moving filter
I have a block built filter system that includes an aerated K1 bay. I don't heat in the summer but, as winter approaches, I heat to prevent the pond temperature from falling below 13°C until the coldest part of winter arrives when I readjust the thermostat to drop the temperature, reasonably quickly...

Re: General Discussion
I saw it soon after it had been posted before it had any views. It was loosely worded about safety so it could have been about pond security but it had a link to a site that sold covert spying equipment so I edited the post as above so that, if it was a genuine member, they could continue but they w...

Re: hypodermics
Duncan, I've seen people prevent the vacuum forming by pulling back the syringe to the same amount as they intend to draw off before inserting the needle into the bottle and then "injecting" that air into the bottle before drawing off the antibiotic. The bottle initially becomes slightly p...
