Re: Airlift update: Koi pond running just on air

Very interesting, and for me in particular the bit about the automatic filter cleaning. I am in the process of setting something similar up myself and it's good to hear that someone else has achieved it successfully.

Re: deep ponds

There's some potential pitfalls with deep ponds described in this thread, including some insights from Mike Snaden:

Re: pond filter automation

I read Stuart Tom's pond build on the Koi UK website and spoke to Stuart at the national this year. He does what you are planning Eds - and I think you mention that in your thread so I won't repeat here. I spoke to the vendor of one of the bead filter companies at the National and asked about automa...

pond filter automation

I've been thinking about automating my pond. I started by making water changes automatic via a constant trickle in/out system. Now I'm looking to automate filter cleaning, and have ideas based around a combination of timers, air pumps and solenoid valves. Are there any folk on the forum who have aut...

Re: deep ponds

Ed - it's in Koi Carp magazine, last paragraph on page 29. It just got me thinking, and hence I thought the forum might have some ideas. I'm starting to plan a new pond, which may be some years off. And I'd like to make it deep to increase pond volume. I imagine there would be practical challenges a...

deep ponds

I read in koi carp magazine that raad hassan's pond is 7ft deep and the magazine quote him as saying that is a little too deep and can cause problems. My question is - what kind of problems would you get if your pond is too deep, e.g. more than 6 feet deep? If money were no object, and you had a dig...

Re: air source heat pumps

hi, I use one but it's untested over the winter so I dont have experience that gives you a direct answer. I bought mine in early march. having sad that - march was like most years' winter's! my experience so far is mixed; running it appears to be cost effective versus a straight electric heater, but...

air pumps - 2 x 50l, or 1 x 100l ?

Hope you all had a good Easter break. What are the pro's and con's of using 1 x 100lpm air pump versus 2 x 50lpm air pumps? I need to put air though a converted bubbling k1 conversion - the air pipes and outlets could easily either be one long structure or 2 half length structures covering the same ...

Using bricks in a multi chamber filter

I have a 4 bay filter system built from concrete - it's around 20 years old. You may have seen another post about it. There are some bricks in one of the chambers which are used to support some filter dividing plastic which directs the flow of water through some biological media. Are submersed brick...

Running a shower / trickle filter in the winter

Do people run these types of filters in the winter? I'm experimenting with one for my QT and with large amount of contact between cold air and the media, I think it's cooling my water - which is a bit counter productive. Any thoughts / advice please? Is it possible to run a tricle/shower type of fil...

Re: Thoughts please on planned filter upgrade options

Thanks Ed, the pics are really helpful. I plan to make the adjustments to my filter bays so I have a static K1 followed by moving K1 - and will take before and after shots so you can how I've got on. I just looked at the cost of air pumps and was a little shocked - the cost of the moving K1 section ...

Re: Thoughts please on planned filter upgrade options

Thanks for the tips. Re: flow into the next bay - at the moment there are 2x 4 inch pipes standing vertically in each bay that skim the water from that bay and take it into the next bay. THey are open topped 4 inch pipes. To make them K1 proof, I was planning on lowering the skim height to create ab...

Re: Thoughts please on planned filter upgrade options

Thanks for your responses; it does feel better having had a couple of responses now. For the skimmer - I was thinking of doing what you suggest. Would you add a skimmer with it's own basket or have a skimmer without a basket flowing say to a vortex which might have a larger holding capacity? Can you...
