Re: What good is GH?
Yes I second that! Thanks Duncan, sound and reasoned argument. I have ran my pond now for two years not adding anything but RO and bicarb so have similarly fielded this debate far to often recently, from those who would consider 'zero GH' a health risk to koi. As Andy has brought water recycling int...

Re: What good is GH?
Hi Dave,
Just about to order the 400gpd membranes, and depending on the genius of Mr Finch to get working, but hope to be catching up soon myself!
Keep up the good work!

Re: What good is GH?
the Koi were doing great and the growth and skin appetite everything was brilliant Kim, Noting my comment on 'hobbyist anecdotes' I feel it wrong to offer an 'opinion' but the highlighted bits of your post suggest to me you have very good water, and whilst may need to keep an eye on the ph, and kee...

Re: What good is GH?
Hey Mark, I'm no scientist as you know - but I will offer an opinion. Sadly it falls back to the last thread on here we talked on. PH swings - It's all linked and cannot be any other way. I still think your trying to be too detailed in what is in your water. I am firmly in the RO is a plus for my p...

What good is GH?
One for the scientists here. Those with the fish biology and water chemistry degrees - what does the koi we keep need out of our 'unspecified' cocktail that makes up the GH from our tap water? I keep marine fish so I know exactly the range of Calcium and Magnesium, etc etc required to keep them heal...

Re: Ph Swings
Greg, This possibly is the issue, non existant GH not helping with such levels of nitrate and phosphate in the pond, however I would guess the success of your pond is more likely due to the extreme water replacement reducing levels of these two rather than the presence of GH. Have you tested for nit...

Re: Ph Swings
Mark we are still not sure there is any Zinc in the treatment I used as it is still being tested? What has already been said is that zinc is far more toxic at a lower PH say 7.0 and safer the higher the PH. I am very interested to know what the ideal water conditions are so that we don't promote th...

Re: Ph Swings
Greg, The levels of carnbonic anhydrase in the blood that paula reynolds found were toxic, and relate to zinc (dont ask me how  ) but they dont get elevated on their own! Granted, its got to be a combination of factors, but we all know too often hobbyists falling foul of these 'chemical' treat...

Re: Ph Swings
Hi Greg (seriously been meaning to ring for a chat, and will do!), Yes, lots to think of, and its always difficult to detract from the vairables affecting an 'incident' like Andy has suffered, and the long term 'management' of pH, but your points, like many we have discussed are anecdotal now, as un...

Re: some filter reading for you
I would be interested to hear if anyone has come up with 'conclusions' from this quite 'heavy reading' as I will confess, it was a fair bit above my level! In particular it would be good to hear if the conclusions translate as help for the hobbyist in keeping water quality on a tight 'water budget' ...

Re: Ph Swings
Hi Dunc, Not rush with this topic, as its an ongoing issue, but to answer your points;- 1 GH at most 1 degree as the colour is very light at this end when testing. 2 I have a layer of 'matting' around my pond, which never gets too bad, but I know Andy had a healthier level in the pond, hence the tre...

Ph Swings
Hi Dunc, Its been a relatively trouble free year so far (hope not to jinx myself there  ) but fellow hobbyists and myself have still issues with pH swings, despite having reasonable kH levels in the pond. Andy Finch has had a few issues with treating for blanket weed with Kusuri Eco Gold when ...

Update pic attached - rear of tail now clear again, but front side shows return of the dermo, but moved to one side of the original site.

Re: Egg Bound Fish - Can "Spawn" be Induced?
Steve,
I took three koi to a koi show this last weekend, and two spawned in the vat, so begs the question - have you tried to induce 'naturally'?
Big temp swings, change of water etc etc.
Mark
PS they are both back in the pond with a fag on lip attitiude...... not after affects.....

Re: RO buffering-Bicarb or source water
Hi Kev, I remember seeing a traditional Japanese family living with magoi in their 'pond' which wasnt really a pond, but a diverted part of the river passing their house, with a metal grate at the entrance and exist keeping the koi in there, and they were purely there to clean up the scraps from the...
