Re: GOLDEN TENCH,ANYONE HAVE THEM PLEASE?

OH WELL !! perhaps the Canadian Tench are more voracious than the British ones  ... However the bottom of my pond isn't too bad at all,but my better half likes crystal clear water and no plants !!........ so it looks as if the new pond that has been built but not lined etc., yet may be han...

Re: GOLDEN TENCH,ANYONE HAVE THEM PLEASE?

Interesting stuff! Tell me Ed do you keep the wild dark Tench or the Golden ones? I wonder if it is the greeny dark ones that clear up,as perhaps the refined golden may have had the "bottom feeding instinct" bred out of them...This defintely happens in dogs bred for show and dogs bred for ...

GOLDEN TENCH,ANYONE HAVE THEM PLEASE?

I happend along a Canadian website on Koi and ponds etc. They were all moaning about the muck in the bottom of their ponds - some had drains, some used vacs. One letter stood out from a lady who had a 2-3000 gallon liner pond. She said that she always kept 2 tench with Koi and goldfish in her pond and t...

Re: The weather!! a newbie worries, will they die????

Hi Maxine,it is very nice of you to offer help as you have.I would love to come and see your set up but unfortunately I cannot travel far due to ill health. The latest is that the pool is coming on at a spanking pace, the 6 - 9 inch base of concrete is setting, and some of the walls have been started w...

Re: The weather!! a newbie worries, will they die????

:) Thanks Maxine - I put the drain theory to the OAP builder  but he wants the base level not sloping, and he does not want to cut the liner (perish the thought),so it looks as if it will be an Oase 3 for me too.!! I work from home so I can keep an eye on the ponds through the day,and the fish ...

Re: Plastic Bubblewrap ?

dazz: you don't join it,you just float it on the water in strips and it stays put,I have 3 layers on top of each other. If you read the book Cult of the Koi,this is what they recommend. There is nothing to harm the fish as they use this stuff in operating theatres for us lot - humans  My koi pon...

Re: The weather!! a newbie worries, will they die????

Gerry thanks for the tip about adding the drain later on,I may have to if the babies all survive, we are just in the planning stage now, waiting for better weather  living near the Brecon Beacons,so pretty high here. Jagger thanks for the tip on the Butyl,I knew there must be a difference.Toda...

Re: The weather!! a newbie worries, will they die????

VM this will mean cutting a hole in the liner, and surely more work for the OAP ? Perhaps if I could see a bottom drain working,it would be different. We are isolated here so not much chance to see professional Koi ponds, although the water centres we have visited all had them,I could ask there. All my ...

Re: The weather!! a newbie worries, will they die????

Thanks Gazza, this is my 1 st Winter with Koi,I had a look this morning and some of them came cruising from under the bubble wrap to say hello, looking remarkably well, then they cruised back under. The bubble is defintely kicking in now and the difference in the temp between ponds is staying +3 on the ...

Re: Plastic Bubblewrap ?

:D Mio, I have a double small bubble wrap on the pond surface with all the floating plants shoved underneath, over this I have put another double thick layer of larger bubble wrap, and kept about a 2 foot strip open by the waterfall, and the filter corner. The bubble wrap needs little tethering on the s...

Re: The weather!! a newbie worries, will they die????

Thanks Gazza, Our pond constructor was 65 yesterday   so I had better not kill him off just yet,not until I am satisfied on the ponds front that is   Seriouly though our garden is an old walled one,so the flower beds are more or less set with stone paths all over the place. One po...

Re: The weather!! a newbie worries, will they die????

:) Thanks for the assurances to all,I am so new to all of this.My husband built me these ponds and I am having another one in the Spring.Being a 100% animal lover,I cannot bear to think that I have let my new fish pals down. This morning there was a thickish layer of ice on the small "fishless&q...

The weather!! a newbie worries, will they die????

 Sorry to be a nuisance as you are all probably experts at this, but I was shocked to find my above ground pond was only 4 degrees this morning, especially after all the padding I put on it. I put thick Bubblewrap floating, and left a good strip open,at night I pull a large blue tarpaulin over t...
