Ken at Coldwater Collection has a large woodburner in one of his fishouses and heats the air, he does still have traditional heat exchangers etc powered by oil c/h to stabilise etc, but it is used a lot less due to the burner. He is in process of buying a commercil one as well that uses a hopper fee...

There is another media that comes in from Japan , it looks exactly the same as the original slightly smaller bhm , it still has the hollow in the middle. Ive seen it being used with good results. It was at Coldwater Collection nr Coventry that had it for sale, Ive seen it being used at a colleagues ...

The problem you will have is after a short while the water will track through the pipe, if you have not fitted a system at each end to force the water through, if the inlet and outlet are in the same place. This will effect contact time on the carbon and it will not react properly.
