Re: Koi Anatomy Question
Shiros are prone to deformities such as this and have a slight kink or twist just after the head. Often they're really hard to spot and also the pattern can make them look kinked when they aren't and vice versa. Taking a few photos can really help see any issues.

Syd the virus adapting and changing in the long run is very likely to be a good thing! Just like flu it will mean that some forms Will become commonplace but much less virulent. There is a trade off with viruses. The more easily and widely spread they are the less virulent they tend to be (with a fe...

Re: Trickle Tower
I put K1 in a DIY shower at first and it trapped so much waste that I needed to regularly dump the whole lot in a tub of water and clean it all, messy and not very effective as I only cleaned it once or so a week. The BHM I replaced it with has only needed cleaning once and that's only because I com...

Re: sieve pump fed or gravity
Can you adapt the skimmer to gravity feed and then feed that into a sieve or pod? I've bought one of those black skimmers and am going to convert it using a 6" to 4" rubber flexible connector (http://www.plastics-express.co.uk/product/144-160mm_x_110-125mm_Adaptor_P-PTE650) so I can gravit...

Re: filters.
I agree with Dave, you ideally need an overlap of the media and gradually replace one with the other. when I switched from flocor to K1 I had the K1 maturing in a bag in the vortex for 4 weeks before using it which meant I got no problems at all when I switched.
What are you switching to and from?

Re: getting to the heart of the problem
Hi Dave, Sounds like you may be onto something and although i know guys who run bead filters i am not a fan of any closed system as you just cant see whats going on and if they are not cleaned enough they can go a bit off. Totally agree with this Gazza, couldn't have a filter that acted like a big ...

Re: Sleeping sickness
Heat and salt is the treatment as the others have said. Just in case, did any fish show any symptoms before you added the Japanese fish and does that dealer heat ramp and/or blood test fish?

Re: Interbreeding Carp
Thanks for the info Duncan. I''m very uneducated on this species. Do either of you know what kind of impact a breeding pair could have on other fish. Eg. Largemouth bass, various sunfish, and brown bullhead? Would the carp affect the breeding beds of these species? I noticed two hatches yesterday (...

Re: Interbreeding Carp
Common carp and koi carp are the same species. Whether they will breed successfully is more down to the pond and its other inhabitants.

Was it so small you couldn't see them on the slide? And did he sell you all the various treatments you've used? Sorry but Trichodina2 sounds a little suspicious to me! Has anyone else heard of it?

Re: Air powered return
Hi Bob and thanks for replying. I was planning to have about a metre and a half high vertical riser for the uplift. I like the idea of coming out of the base of the chamber! That'll work nicely on my design! Do you have a slide valve then to isolate the chamber for cleaning? Interesting about the re...
