Re: Streamflow ponds???

Hi Bob I don't think there are any inherent pitfalls with the streamflow design. I looked into it in some detail (and visited a few ponds such as Stuart's - very impressive in terms of execution and quality/growth rate of fish) and thought it was the best design I have seen in terms of growth potent...

Re: A Riddle

Hi Duncan I now know what it is because I cheated by looking it up because I was completely stumped, so I won't give it away for anyone else who wants to make an educated guess. What I don't understand is whether it has a specfic purpose in koi/carp? Function or lack of seems to vary with different ...

Re: only areating k1 media for 15 - 30 mins a day, your thou

If this is true (and the argument looks pretty convincing) doesn't this raise the question about whether Nexus units are necessary at all? They are designed and prmoted as the optimum way to use K1 media; a key selling point has always been that agitating the K1 on a continuous basis promotes growth...

Re: Foods.................Again

Hi Gazza 1. Don't use colour enhancers. 2. Don't use growth foods - there isn't that much difference in protein content between good quality foods and growth foods and unless I had extremely high pond temp, I don't think the additional protein would be used for growth, so would only add to waste. 3....

Yet another question about concrete bases

Hi everyone Sorry to keep asking questions about concrete bases but I keep discovering I don't know quite as much as I thought. The substrate is red shale. For the most part it is solid or has gouges full of red shale rubble. In order of preference do you think I should; 1. Lay the pad directly over...

Pond wall proximity to edge of base

Hi Guys

Does anyone know how far in from the edge of the concrete pad I should build the pond walls? The pond is 22'x10'x6'. I seem to remember that the walls should be approx 6" in from the edge to help spread the load across the base. Is this correct?

Regards

Re: Pond base thickness

Hi Gazza

I didn't realise how much effort is required to just to keep a hole in reasonable condition. With current forecasts haven't a clue when I will be able to lay the base.

Re: Pond base thickness

Thanks everyone. I will make sure that there is a minimum of 9 inches. I'm not too concerned about it moving (solid rock underneath) more the total weith of water. I've just spent a pleasant day removing slurry caused by rain knocking soil and rcok fragements into the bottom. I've also covered the s...

Re: Pond base thickness

Hi Justin Thanks very much. I thought it might be around that depth but just wanted to be sure. Starting to get a bit twitchy now that the reality of putting in the base approaches. I've decided to try to even up the end of the base using a kangyo. This should save me quite a bit in extra readymix. ...

Pond base thickness

Hi Guys Wonder if anyone can help with this one. I have started preparing the floor for pouring the concrete base. There is quite a slope along the length of the base (even with an 8 ton digger couldn't go any further down at one end). The substrate is red shale so no worries about movement. I am go...

Re: Pre filtration for Nexus units

Hi Justin I thought there might be a few issues with the Nexus; I've witnessed a few ponds where they are the main source of mechanical and bio filtration and things have worked out too clever - admittedly they were on ponds that were quite heavily stocked and fed. I might put the return from one of...

Pre filtration for Nexus units

Hi guys I wonder if anyone can help. I am still planning the filtration system for an 8K gallon pond. Part of the setup will be bakki showers but I am also going to run 2 Nexus 310's from the bottome drains. I would like to put some form of pre-filtration before them and I ain't particularly enamour...

Re: Jon's pond build

Hi Yorkie Definitely going gravity fed - still pontificating on exactly where the bottom drains are going to emerge into the filter house area due to couple of possible configurations. Filters will be in the far end of the pond pit. Re. pouring the base - do you think it will make any difference if ...

Re: Jon's pond build

Hi Glenn Sorry, not too up on building terminology; I see what you mean. To be honest if it was perfectly flat, it would probably be possible to build straight off the floor - the ground is solid rock! However just to be on the safe side I think I will follow the hardcore/concrete route. I still can...
