Re: Some advice. Koi seem fine, its the goldfish this time

Thanks guys

The salt hasnt gone in yet, but yes I think I will just sit it out. Pretty certain the remaining 5 bloaters will not survive longterm.

Will just carry on keeping an eye on the others and weekly scrapes to make sure

Re: Some advice. Koi seem fine, its the goldfish this time

Lost a Goldie this morning Did a Autopsy. Was full of yellow fluid (urine?) and a lot of viceral fat. Kidneys were huge. So Kidney failure definately cause of death. Now its either due to obesity (They scoff the koi food!) or the MGF, PP and Flubenol treatments nuked them (did leave the usual gap an...

Re: Some advice. Koi seem fine, its the goldfish this time

Update The FMG and Flube treatments have wiped out the Costia and Flukes. Koi scrapes are all clear as are goldfish But now I have 6 Goldfish that are very bloated, have dropsy and their bellies are going yellow (not red) and they loose attitude control, some float tail out of water, one lays on sid...

Re: TDS

LOL, I tried the cat litter and laterite anaerobic filters this summer, The cat litter just dissolved and I had a TDS of 1440 for a week!. Fish loved the murk! I hated cleaning the sponges after that (Thats why they are being replaced by Static K1 as we speak)

520 from tap and 440 in pond. Only thing I notice is that blacks tend to fade a little in the summer.

Re: How Much Air in the Pond?

Yep and thats why they like small bubbles, More surface area per unit volume But us marine keepers also use our protein skimmers as an ozone introduction and off gassing point, hence newer skimmers use media and tumble the water down through it in an updraft of ozone for part of the skimmers length ...

Re: How Much Air in the Pond?

Us marine folks use wood airstone for fine bubbles in protein skimmers because they have more surface area for protein to stick to. BUT small bubbles are NOT better for gas exchange for two reasons, 1) Surface tension is much higher in small bubbles so its effectively harder for gas to pass through ...

Re: How Much Air in the Pond?

the bubbles dont get the air into the water, they drag the water up from the bottom and circulate it. the air dissloves in at the surface.

Re: Anoxic Filtration

But for those of us that also keep marines and corals, then anearobic filters are quite normal and well established. Live sand and live rock are all just natural examples of the BHM media where you have aerobic activity on the outside and anearobic on the inside. Even the Eheim wet/dry filters use t...
