I would agree on the basket, which was why I was thinking of a fabric sock suspended vertically in the outer chamber of the nexus.
The fabric would prevent the flow through problem, while still allowing water into the media inside.

Re: Could I make an Anoxic Nexus?
Thank you Actually, it was reading your article that got me thinking and I've been mulling it over for a while. I'd even thought of trying to put baskets in the nexus, but unlikely to get many in without the 'flow through' rather than 'flow past' problem. The vertical sausage idea came to me and the...

Could I make an Anoxic Nexus?
Hi, As a long term lurker and occasional poster I have watched with interest the many posts on filtration and the changing orthodoxy. I have a 15000l oval pond with a nexus 200 on the BD. It is currently lightly stocked, but I intend to add more fish this year. Having read Syd's articles on anoxic f...

Re: Air Up Lifts
Hi, wasn't sure whether to bump this old thread or start a new one. I am looking to have pump-free ponds with the new ones now under way (after what seems an age, digging started last week). Having read everything I can find I am still unsure what size lifts to have and whether before or after the f...

Re: Split bead filter! :(
Just to add a quick point on what Vippymini said on claiming when things fail. I'm pleased that the manufacturer is helping out with bits, but the onus is on the retailer that sold you the filter to do the repair Your contract is with the retailer that sold you the goods, not the manufacturer - any ...

Re: UV is it needed?
Mine broke 2 or 3 years ago when a small stone shattered the quartz sleeve and I have not bothered to replace. I get a period of greenish water in the spring, but it quickly goes and I have excellent clarity. When I build the new pond I am minded to install one, but I think I will use it on an "...

Re: One I did yesterday
Andy, The outside of the back of the box is cool because you are reflecting the heat from it. I would have all of the inside of the box black - so that it absorbs the light and radiates as heat. I would then insulate the outside of the box to stop it radiating the heat outwards - by all means use fo...

David,
Useful information on performance, thank you.
One question I have is on noise.
How intrusive is the noise, and how loud?
Cheers
Gordon

Re: One I did yesterday
Andy, couple of thoughts. You are quite right, you don't want anything in the flow from the pump. You will take energy from the flow and that is the same as adding head and it will cost you more energy to get the flow rate back to where it was than you will capture. Putting it in the return is recap...

I just don't think they'll move the water you need them to - especially if your panel is on the roof.
The £55 one will do 380 lph - the central heating pump 3500lph

Re: One I did yesterday
I like the simplicity too. The only problem is the efficiency. If Electrical generation is only 12% efficient, how big a PV panel are you going to need to generate enough electric to run the pump in the middle of winter when sunlight is at its weakest. That said - you are only running a low wattage ...

Re: One I did yesterday
Just a quick addition from thinking a bit more (dangerous I know) I know there's a lot less sun in winter (when the water heating is required), but water heating systems are always concerned with getting the water up to 55-60 degC so you can have a bath. We're not, we're trying to get to 15 degC. Th...

Re: One I did yesterday
Hi Tic Toc, from what I have read it is much more efficient to collect heat than to generate electricity. It looks like the best PV panels (that generate electricity) are only about 12% efficient, but a water heating panel can be 70%. You would need a much larger panel area to generate electricity t...

Hi,
I'm thinking of using airlifts for my pond so just a couple of questions if I may.
Are you using 1.5" or 2" pipe and what sort of air stones do you have in them?
Thanks
Gordon
